Being told you may need lumbar fusion can feel like a major turning point. While spinal fusion may be appropriate for certain conditions, surgery is not always the only path for managing chronic lower back pain. At Midwest Sports and Interventional Spine, we help patients in Lake Geneva and Kenosha explore personalized, minimally invasive options when appropriate before making decisions about major spine surgery.
Lumbar fusion permanently joins two or more vertebrae to stabilize part of the lower spine. A surgeon may recommend it for certain cases of spinal instability, degeneration, deformity, or other structural problems.
Because every case is different, a non-surgical second opinion can provide another perspective on what is causing your symptoms and whether less invasive treatments deserve consideration. This does not mean that fusion is always unnecessary. Instead, the goal is to understand your diagnosis, review your imaging and determine which options make sense for your specific condition.
When evaluating persistent back or leg pain, we look beyond an MRI finding alone. Imaging needs to be considered alongside your symptoms, physical examination, function and treatment history.
For your appointment, it can be helpful to bring:
• Recent MRI, CT or X-ray images and reports
• Notes from your surgeon or other specialists
• A list of medications and previous treatments
• Information about physical therapy or injections you have tried
• Questions about the proposed lumbar fusion and other options
This information helps us develop a clearer picture of your pain and determine whether a non-surgical or minimally invasive approach may be appropriate.
Depending on the source of your symptoms, treatment may involve a combination of approaches rather than immediately proceeding to lumbar fusion. Our practice focuses on minimally invasive treatment and non-opioid pain management whenever clinically appropriate.
Options may include targeted epidural steroid injections for certain types of nerve-related pain, radiofrequency ablation for pain arising from specific spinal joints, medication management, physical therapy and activity modification. For selected patients with spinal stenosis or persistent chronic pain, other interventional procedures may also be considered after a detailed evaluation.
A second opinion should not be viewed as a guarantee that surgery can be avoided. Some spinal conditions require surgical evaluation, particularly when there is significant instability, progressive neurological loss or another problem that cannot be adequately addressed with conservative care.
If you have been told you need lumbar fusion in Lake Geneva, Kenosha or the surrounding area, getting another perspective can help you understand the reasons behind the recommendation and whether appropriate alternatives remain. We can review your previous imaging, treatment history and current symptoms to help you make a more informed decision about your next step.
